October Recipes

Here are some new recipes that I tried this month:

Avocado Hummus
This was a great lunch.  I love avocados and I love hummus so I figured this was going to be a winner.  The only change I will make for next time is to cut the recipe is half and make it two mornings in a row.  I made a full batch on Monday and by Tuesday morning it was pretty brown.  Still tasted good, but didn't look the best.

Pita Pizzas
This website has a lot of great ideas for school lunches.  I tried the one that was just like a pizza Lunchable.  I cut a whole wheat pita into slices and brought along pizza sauce, cheese, and pepperoni in separate containers.  You have to like cold pizza (which I do) to enjoy this one.

Smoothies
I tend to be very busy at my desk over lunch so I had the idea of bring a smoothie for lunch.  Something easy to eat while I check emails, grade papers, etc.  This site has a ton of great smoothie combinations.  I don't know if I will get through them all, but I might try :)

S'more Croissants
This is a great, easy little dessert.  We have pigs in a blank frequently, and I always have croissants left over.  Now, I can take those extra ones, add a little chocolate chips and marshmallows and have a yummy dessert waiting for us after dinner.

I try very hard to not cook the same things over and over.  Of course we have our family favorites, but I also enjoy cooking new things.  I try to cook something new each week.  In the past, I have subscribed to many cooking magazines to get new ideas.  I would tear out recipes that interested me.  Just recently I create a new organized way to store and save these recipes.  You can read about that here - Recipe Binder.  Now I have Pinterest :) The nice thing about Pinterest is I don't have to print off the recipes.  I can pin them to my boards and quickly access them on my iPad when I am meal planning and cooking.  Here are my recipe boards if you want to take a look:

Displaying Artwork

My daughter loves to draw, paint, glue, and color.  I always have a ton of art projects that she has either done at home or at daycare.  I feel bad just looking at it and then throwing it away.  I have created three different ways throughout my house to display her artwork.

In her bedroom, I hung three frames above her dresser and display some artwork there.  I have removed glass because some of her projects are 3D.

In the toy room, I hung some string above a table using two eye hooks.  I use binder clips to display the art projects on the string.  You could also use paper clips or clothes pins.

The last artwork display spot is in our dinning room.  Earlier I took an old painting and turned it into a bulletin board.  You can read that process here.

Reagan loves having her artwork on display and enjoys showing people when new art work is being displayed.

Decorating for Halloween

My husband loves to help me decorate for Halloween.  He usually takes care of the outside decorations and I the take care of inside the house.  This year I also got some help from a pair of little hands :)

Here are a couple of pictures showing what my house looks like every October.

Toddler Bag for Church

Like every family, we are having a hard time keeping our toddler quiet during church. Going to the nursery isn't working; we usually get paged after about 10 minutes because she won't stop screaming.  This results in my husband watching the sermon on TV from the church cafe as I sit in the sanctuary by myself.  This is resulting in us not going to church because it is becoming too much of a hassle.  We might as well just stay home and listen to the sermon online.

To try and fix this issue, I decided to make a church bag for her that would have many different (quiet) items to keep her busy in church.  I decided to visit my local dollar store to see what I could find.

Here is what I came home with:

I found several things including:
  • A color book and new crayons
  • A magnetic dress-up doll
  • Stickers
  • A magnetic drawing board
  • A plastic folder
I am planning on putting just a few of the coloring pages in the folder along with one sheet of stickers, some blank pages of paper, and a few Sesame Street color sheets printed from Parenting.  I am hoping that by using the folder, I can cut down on some of the noise from turning pages, ripping pages, etc.

These will be only things she gets to play with at church, hoping the excitement will help in keeping her interested in them.  Wish me luck!

What do you do to keep your children quiet at church?
