June Recipes

I try very hard to not cook the same things over and over.  Of course we have our family favorites, but I also enjoy cooking new things.  I try to cook something new each week.  In the past, I have subscribed to many cooking magazines to get new ideas.  I would tear out recipes that interested me.  Just recently I create a new organized way to store and save these recipes.  You can read about that here - Recipe Binder.  Now I have Pinterest :) The nice thing about Pinterest is I don't have to print off the recipes.  I can pin them to my boards and quickly access them on my iPad when I am meal planning and cooking.  Here are my recipe boards if you want to take a look:
                               Yummy Snacks                                   Slow Cooker
                               Delicious Desserts                                Soups
                               Drinks                                                  Daily Dinners
                               Good Morning Breakfast                       Lunches

Here are some amazing recipes that I tried this past month.

Nutella Yogurt Fruit Dip
I made this dip to go along with some fruit kabobs that I made for my sister-in-laws baby shower.  It was delicious!

Fruit Salsa with Baked Cinnamon Chips
My mom and I also made this for the baby shower.  It was so easy!

Ravioli with Sausage & Tomato Cream Sauce
My family loves ravioli so I am always looking for a new way to try it. I found this one in my Taste of Home magazine and my husband loves sausage so I thought this would be a good fit.  After dinner he asked to have this meal again :)

This month was a little slow on the new recipes.  Sorry!  I have been enjoying spending time outside with the family so we have been grilling the basics - hot dogs, brats, chicken, etc.  Hopefully next month I will get back in the routine of trying something new once a week.

Creating a Playroom

Our house is not very large and a two-year-old comes with a lot of toys (as I am sure most of you already know).  We used to keep some toys in a cubical unit in our living room.  However, when she turned two she got a lot of big toys for her birthday what wouldn't fit in the fabric bins that go in the cubical unit.  We decided to keep these upstairs in her room.  This worked for a while until she wanted to spend every waking moment in her room.  I can't just leave a two year old alone upstairs while I cook dinner or get other work done around the house.  I told my husband that before summer vacation started, we needed to figure out a way to store most of her toys downstairs.

One night I had a brilliant idea.  We would move my husbands office, which is right next to the living room, upstairs to where my office was.  We could then turn his office into a playroom!  I never really used my office anymore because I was always playing with my daughter.  I only need a place to plug my laptop in.  I really had to convince my husband.  I explained how if I had to be upstairs with our daughter all summer long, I wouldn't get any of the home improvement projects done that he wanted me to work on.  I also explained how nice it would be to have a place that all the kids can go to play when we have friends over.  We could maybe then have some adult conversation instead of having to always yell over the kids.  Finally, he gave in and said we could do it.

My husbands office has not been touched since we moved in 8 years ago!  Not a single piece of furniture has moved, not a single new picture has been hung.  Nothing ever really left the office, but many items found their home there.  I was hoping to use this as an opportunity for him to go through all of this stuff and do some purging.

I new that it was going to take a while so I suggested we start on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.  I could not believe all the stuff that was coming out of his office!  Once we had everything out, before it went into the new office, he decided if he really needed it in the new office, if we could pack it away, or if it could be donated.

Once everything was out of the old office, we took down one of the built in desks.  I also had tons and tons of nail holes to fill before I could give it a fresh new coat of paint.  I don't usually like white walls, but I didn't want the wall color to compete with all the great colors of the toys and books so I decided to keep it.  Who knows, it may change yet this summer :)

After painting, in came all of my daughter's stuff.  I also needed to create a little office space for me so I also brought in all of my necessities - bill paying stuff, Project Life stuff, etc.  I found in our basement a plastic rolling cart and a file cabinet that fit underneath the built in desk.  These worked perfect to hold all my stuff.

We used an old bookcase to hold all the books and coloring books.  I used two wicker baskets that used to be our coffee table to create a reading nook in the corner (and the offer more storage space).  My daughter's table that she loves to play Sesame Street on fit perfectly in the old closet.  The cubical that used to be in the living room fit perfectly on the little wall under the window when you walk into the room.

Because I didn't like all my stuff showing through the clear plastic drawers on the plastic rolling cart, I covered some cardboard in wrapping paper and glued a label on each drawer.

So far, the playroom has been a huge hit both with my daughter and my husband and I.  It is so nice to have our living room back and to have a place where we can quickly throw her toys if we are having people over. My daughter also loves to be able to play with her toys without having to ask to go upstairs.

A Bug Baby Shower

Last weekend my mother and I threw a baby shower for my sister-in-law who is expecting her first baby in July.  Her and my brother have always referred to the baby as "bug" so we thought the baby shower should have a bug theme.  I did a little browsing of Pinterest for ideas, but all I could really find were lady bug showers and she is having a boy so that wasn't going to work.  I ended up just adjusting a few ideas I found to make it a boy bug party.

First, we had to create invites.  I took on this challenge and ended up having a lot of fun making them.  The majority of it was done on my computer.  I then printed them off and glued them to various colors of card stock.  I had a very hard time embedding them into this post so please click here to see the baby shower invites.

My mom and I are not big game players at showers so we didn't want to have too many, but we figured we had to have a couple.  We decided to have a jar filled with gummy worms and have the guests guess at how many worms there were.  Here is the game sheet we used.

We also decided to have some jars of baby food with the labels removed and asked the guests to figure out what flavor they were.  This game was hilarious.  Some tasted them, some smelled them, and some just looked at the color and guessed.  I was shocked when three of my aunts who haven't had babies in over 15 years got almost all of them correct!  Here is the game sheet we used.

We went pretty simple with the food and decorations.  For decorations, my mom found some bug nets and cute bug catching kits at a local dollar store that we placed on the tables.  The gifts for the two games were gerber daises so these she also used on the tables for decorations.  To finish it all off, she got some colorful balloons for the food and gift tables.

The shower was in the early afternoon.  Figuring many people had already eaten lunch, we decided to have just a few cold salads and some fruit.

Instead of going with a cake, to keep with the "bug" theme, we made little dirt cake cups for each guest.

The party was a lot of fun and actually not a whole lot of work.  We did make all the food ourselves, but my mom and I had a good time spending the morning in the kitchen together.  I also think it helped that we started planing a couple months in advance so we didn't have to do everything in just a couple of days.
